This two-part task emphasizes students’ ability to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them (MP.1), thus making it a “practice forward” task. Students also apply their understanding of rational numbers to solve a contextual problem.

The task assesses major grade 7 content, calling for students to solve problems involving rational numbers. Though this task may initially seem simple, it requires that students think deeply and analyze givens, constraints, relationships, and goals, as described in Standard for Mathematical Practice 1. Furthermore, it exemplifies the assessment of problem solving using a machine-scorable format.

In Part a, students must grapple with two different quotients and make sense of the situation—in particular, the limiting factor—to arrive at the correct answer. In Part b, students deal with unit prices. However, the task is posed in such a way that there are many possible solution paths; students could use various forms of reasoning to arrive at the correct answer.
