|Mathematics unfolding: Rate
In middle school, students begin a deep study of ratios and proportional relationships. They represent ratios in multiple ways and use ratios to describe proportional situations. Because rate is a ratio that compares two quantities that are measured in different units, students apply their understanding of ratios as they explore rates as a way to describe change.
In this animation, students begin their study of rates by exploring different consumer finance examples. Because the examples are familiar to all students, the foundational concept of finding a unit rate becomes accessible to a diverse group of learners. By investigating unit rates as more than simple division problems, but rather as ways to describe change in two quantities, students build critical connections to later work with slope in Algebra I.
